Ingredients for Zarda:

1 Rice 500 gram
2 Sugar 400 gram
3 Ghee 1 cup
4 Kishmish 50 gram
5 Khoya 100 gram
6 Pistachio 50 gram
7 Almonds 50 gram
8 Desiccated coconut 25 gram
9 Milk 1/2 cup
10 Yellow food colour 1 teaspoon
11 Cardamom 4 pieces
12 Oil 1/2 cup
13 Water 2 cup


Procedure for preparing Zarda:

  1. In a pan, pour water, yellow food colour, desiccated coconut, cardamom, oil and rice. Bring to boil then turn off the heat.
  2. In another pan, heat ghee and fry kishmish, pistachio and almond. Pour water, milk, boiled rice and sugar. Mix all the ingredients and cover the pan with lid and cook the rice on low heat for 7-10 minutes.
  3. Pour zarda chawal on serving tray and garnish with khoya and colourful cham cham sweets.



  • Avoid over cooking the zarda rice to retain its colour quality.
